What is Intercultural Dialogue?
Intercultural dialogue refers to the open and respectful exchange of ideas between individuals and groups from different cultural backgrounds. It fosters mutual understanding, promotes cooperation, and helps build inclusive societies by encouraging engagement across cultural differences. According to the 2001 UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, intercultural dialogue is essential for ensuring "harmonious interaction among people and groups with plural, varied and dynamic cultural identities as well as their willingness to live together" (Article 2, UNESCO, 2001).
Intercultural Connections is built on seven core principles designed to guide meaningful and respectful discussions by project founder Annika Maurer.
Expect to learn something new: every interaction is an opportunity for growth & understanding.
Provide context to your statements: assume that others may not share your background or knowledge - explain rather than assume.
Don’t assume anything - always check your assumptions: recognizing our biases & seeking clarity helps prevent misunderstandings.
Ask for clarification: if something is unclear, ask questions rather than make assumptions.
Agree to disagree: respectful disagreement is a natural part of meaningful discussions.
Ask for the ‘why’: understanding different perspectives requires curiosity about the reasoning behind them.
Be curious: Listen to learn, feel & connect. True dialogue happens when we listen with an open heart & mind.
